ISLAMABAD: These are strange times. Everyone around us is seen searching for someone that he could lean on. History reveals, in these circumstances, most of us turn and look up to the leaders of our countries. This is, perhaps, a common phenomenon around the world and Pakistan is no exception.
Following ouster of Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan’s most popular politician and three-time Prime Minister earlier this month, things have been critical for ruling party as well as the country.
Stock market crashed in Pakistan soon after country’s Supreme Court disqualified three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif last month on charges of corruption in the Panamagate case.
In the middle of political uncertainty, financial instability, domestic troubles, and off course international confusion, even heavyweights of ruling party, the ruling PML-N, avoided to lead the party. Here came Maryam Nawaz Sharif to save the day for her father and his party.
In a successful attempt to fill the vacuum, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, well educated daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif once again stepped forwarded and took responsibility to bring house in order. She didn’t fail her father this time too.
Known as a ‘King Maker’ among prominent leaders of ruling PML-N, Maryam Nawaz Sharif not only helped her father to handle his party in post-disqualification scenario, but also won hearts of many first by selecting name for new Prime Minister and then finalizing names for new cabinet.
It was not first time that saved the day for her father’s ruling party, the PML-N. Rather, she is said to have played great role in securing landmark victory for his father’s PML-N in general elections held in May 2013. Without taking any public office, she has been working relentlessly to bring reforms in federal education system.
From Prime Minister’s interest free loan scheme and laptop scheme, to upgrading government schools in federal capital territory, Maryam had assisted her father.
Earlier this year, when opposition parties launched well-orchestrated campaigns against her father and the ruling PML-N, Maryam devised strategies to counter them wisely. It was then she won the hearts of leadership of PML-N including her father.
However, in these critical times when his father’s party has been faced with internal problems and reported cracks, Maryam Nawaz’s real test has just began. Not only that she is battling her father’s bitter political opponents like Imran Khan and former President Asif Ali Zardari at one front, also she is formulating strategies to make her father’s PML-N win next general election to be held in 2018.
Many believe that Maryam nawaz is lucky to have young and energetic politicians like Talal Chaudhary who is state Minister for Interior and Maryam Aurangzeb, State for Information and Broadcasting.
Talal Chaudhary has been seen giving shut-up calls to opposition since long. Be it the parliament, talk shows or public rallies, Talal Chaudhary is known to give tough time to Nawaz Sharif’s political opponents.
” Talal is a nightmare for his leader’s political opponents. Even his party leaders has acknowledged many times,” said a senior member of Sharif’s party.
Be it Maryam Nawaz Sharif or Talal Chaudhary, these leaders eventually perceived as the face of the country or state. During these hard times we want to have faith in them, but also wish that those leaders could inspire us to do great things in our lives. However, Talal says, he is just a political worker who believes in his leader’s vision.
” I am just a political worker who believes in his leader’s vision,” Talal told Times of Turkey.
When asked his comments about Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Talal said she is the ‘brain’ behind achievements of her father’s PML-N.
” She is an amazing leader. Be it education reforms or interest-free loan schemes, Maryam sahiba worked wonders,” Talal praised Maryam.
She rose to fame around the time of the 2013 elections, serving as a counterweight to his father’s political opponents mainly cricket-turned politician Imran Khan, whose party from 2011 onward mobilized the apolitical youth and middle class.
Many in Sharif’s ruling party give credit to her for party’s landmark win in general election held in May 2013. Also, many in Pakistan believe she is being groomed for the prime minister’s chair – not her two brothers Hussain and Hassan.
Her father’s political opponent like Imran Khan calls her a Mughal princess. However, Maryam never bothered to counter Khan’s assertion.
many in Pakistan compare Maryam Nawaz Sharif, 43, to Ivanka Trump, daughter of President Donald Trump who has cemented her status as one of the most powerful women in the Donald Trump administration or Sumeyye Erdogan, 31, who is the youngest daughter of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and widely seen as his favourite.
All three including Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Sumeyye Erdogan and Ivanka Trump were included in the annual 100 Women: Presidential Daughters Around The World article, published by a leading British news organisation.
Following her father’s disqualification, Maryam Nawaz is said to have taken responsibility to manage prty affairs. Party’s heavyweights have also shown faith in her capabilities. However, things are not as smooth as it had been in the past. However, with young and talented policians like Talal Chaudhary and Maryam Aurangzeb at her laft and right, one can expect her to do the needful for her father in critical times.
